FAQs

Q. What is saffron, and why is it so highly valued?

A. Saffron is a luxurious spice derived from the dried stigmas of the Crocus sativus flower. What makes it so special is the effort required to produce it—each flower gives just three delicate strands, all of which must be handpicked during a brief autumn bloom. It takes thousands of flowers to yield a small amount of saffron. This labor-intensive process, along with its unique flavor, color, and wellness benefits, makes saffron the most expensive spice in the world.

Q. What makes Pure Whites Mongra Saffron from Kashmir unique?

A. Our Mongra saffron is sourced directly from the pristine fields of Kashmir, where the climate and soil create ideal conditions for saffron cultivation.

Mongra is the top-grade variety, consisting only of the red stigmas (with no yellow or style), which are richer in crocin (for color), safranal (for aroma), and picrocrocin (for flavor). The result is a saffron that is bold, fragrant, and intensely colored—perfect for culinary and wellness use.

Q. How can I tell if saffron is pure or adulterated?

A. Authentic saffron has a distinct look, smell, and behavior. The strands should be uniformly deep red with slightly trumpet-shaped ends. When soaked in warm water or milk, it gradually releases a golden-yellow hue over 5 to 10 minutes. Pure saffron has an earthy, hay-like aroma—not a sweet or synthetic smell. It won’t dissolve or bleed color instantly. If it does, it’s likely adulterated or dyed.

Q. Is saffron safe to use during pregnancy?

A. In traditional Indian households, pregnant women are often given saffron-infused milk to support digestion and emotional balance. However, it’s important to limit the amount to just 2–3 strands a day. Overuse is not recommended. Always consult a doctor before including any new supplement or herb during pregnancy.

Q. Is there a difference between Kashmiri, Iranian, and Spanish saffron?

A. Yes, and it’s quite significant. Kashmiri saffron, especially the Mongra variety, is thicker, darker, and has the highest crocin levels (which determine coloring power). Iranian saffron is more widely available but often has thinner strands and lower aroma. Spanish saffron is milder and more floral. Kashmiri saffron, though rarer and costlier, is considered the most premium for both culinary and medicinal use.
